Slavery’s Hinterlands is a symposium being held on May 2nd – 4th focusing on the role slavery played in New England. Topics will include the dispossession and enslavement of the indigenous peoples of the region, the outsized role that Rhode Island played in the transatlantic slave trade, and how slavery helped finance the industrial revolution in places like Slater Mill in Pawtucket, RI.

Daniel Denvir is currently a visiting fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute and is the host of the symposium. He talked with Chuck Hinman about what you can expect from the symposium and how it’s not just for academics, but for anyone interested in history.
