Some members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation are reacting to President Donald Trump’s decision to launch a series of airstrikes in Syria. The strikes targeted an airfield where a recent chemical attack on Syrian civilians is said to have come from, according to the president.
Congressman Jim Langevin expressed his support of the decision in a statement early Friday morning.
“I believe the response taken tonight by the United States in launching an airstrike in Syria following the morally reprehensible war crimes committed by Bashar al-Assad when he deployed chemical weapons, killing innocent children and civilians, is justifiable, and I support this decision,” said Langevin.
Langevin said no country had the right to use chemical weapons against civilians but moving forward, President Trump must consult with Congress to determine U.S. strategic objectives in Syria.
Meanwhile, Sen. Jack Reed expressed concern over the consequences of the airstrikes saying he wants to know what President Trump’s plans are when it comes to future U.S. involvement in Syria.
Like Langevin, Reed also said the Trump administration would have to justify Thursday’s military airstrikes to Congress.
