The search committee seeking a superintendent for Rhode Island’s largest school district has scheduled a series of public meetings to gather input from residents.
Organizers said the forums will focus on a job description for the Providence superintendent and discussion of the major issues the district faces.
Former Providence Superintendent of Schools, Susan Lusi, surprised many district employees when she announced in May that she would not return for another school year. In an exit interview, Lusi suggested that school funding and complicated city bureaucracy played roles in her decision to leave.
Currently, an interim superintendent is running the Providence schools, Chris Maher from the nonprofit education consulting outfit MassInsight Education. Providence officials have said he is welcome to apply for the permanent position.
The committee leading the search will submit recommendations to Providence’s Board of Education, which will select the finalist.
The first public meeting is scheduled for next Thursday. Here’s the full schedule:
