The high tide in Newport is forecast to be a foot and half above average high tide Tuesday.

But rain from a storm could make those tides even higher, said Janet Freedman, a geologist at the Coastal Resources Management Council.

“If we get an extra half a foot that’s associated with a storm then you might see tides that are about two feet higher, and then you will have some – some of the low-lying roads will be flooded,” said Freedman.

Freedman says the weather forecast might change, but Tuesday’s tides provide a preview of what daily tides may look like with higher sea levels. The king tide is related to the moon’s close proximity, or what’s known as a supermoon.
