The House Judiciary Committee is expected to hold a hearing on a bill that would allow driver’s licenses for the undocumented Tuesday.
In this version of the bill, the license would not serve as a valid form of identification. But supporters argue they would make roads safer.
Similar versions of the bill have been considered by lawmakers in the House and Senate but have never made it to a vote.
During her gubernatorial campaign, Gov. Gina Raimondo expressed support for the idea. Since getting into office, she’s been criticized by immigrant groups for distancing herself from the issue.
Meanwhile, Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello touted his history of blocking such legislation during his 2016 Cranston re-election campaign. Mattiello has said that the legislation doesn’t have the support from lawmakers.
