A solar array in Johnston, RI, has been completed and will begin providing power to Johnston and Providence.
The site of the project is a 32-acre private landfill that was capped over 25 years ago. Now, it’s topped by over 9,400 solar panels that will produce an estimated 3.9 megawatts of electricity.

A separate 29 megawatt facility under construction in Cranston will also contribute to Providence’s clean energy portfolio. In combination, the two solar facilities will meet approximately 60% of the city’s electricity needs.
In a statement Elorza commented, “This project is an important part of our strategy to become a carbon neutral city by 2050.”
According to Rhode Island based company Southern Sky Renewable Energy RI, the renewable energy produced by the array will yield environmental benefits equal to taking 770 vehicles off the road annually and powering 538 households.
The mayors of Providence and Johnston joined business leaders to mark the completion of the solar array.
