Film buffs only have a few days left to catch a flick at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence. After more than 40 years of screening independent and foreign films, the cinema will close its doors Sunday, May 27th.
The Cable Car’s owners say many factors went into the decision to close the movie theatre. Among the reasons, are the changing habits of media consumption, the phasing out of single screen cinemas, and most importantly the fact that they don’t own the building.
Daniel Kamil, co-owner of the cinema, said Sunday operations will run regularly like any other day, showing movies until it’s time to close the doors. The last showing will be a documentary about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, RBG, at 9 p.m.
“And we’ll be doing a one off screening in late June of the Andre Talley film, ‘The Gospel According To Andre,’ at the Columbus Theatre on the 29th of June. So, we’ve collaborated with the people at Columbus to do that,” said Kamil.
However, as for long term plans, Kamil said nothing is set in stone.
