Books can, and do, change lives. Now there’s a sentence that seems so obvious it’s hardly worth saying. But it is worth saying. Many of us can remember a time when we strolled around a library, scanning the shelves casually for sideway words on a spine that caught our eye and whose insides caught our minds and our hearts. Now, of course, we can download books via WiFi to whatever electronic device we prefer – no paper mills or ink required. In whatever ways books come our way, they still matter, especially when they’re well written. Books are endless sources of fresh ideas and perspectives, sometimes the source of true joy and enlightenment, sometimes a recipe for irritation, debate, even fury. Book lover Mike Fink shares his own special appreciation.
