Temperatures are plummeting, as the east coast gets slammed by an arctic blast.  The state Department of Emergency Management is responding by opening warming centers across the state.

The colder than normal temperatures in Rhode Island are hitting dangerously low levels.  Wind chills well below freezing make frostbite and hypothermia real risks if you’re outside.

In response Rhode Island’s Department of emergency management has opened more than a dozen warming centers in Newport, South Kingstown, Pawtucket, and East Greenwich, among others, to help the public keep warm.

The department also offers some tips for keeping safe in the frigid temperature: Dress warmly even for short trips outside.  Watch out for symptoms of frostbite, which includes loss of color in extremities, and hypothermia which includes memory loss, drowsiness and slurred speech.
