Eddy A. Herrera. whose mother is state Rep. Anastasia Williams (D-Providence), is leaving his job at the Statehouse after only a few months.

Herrera informed the Joint Committee on Legislative Services, the hiring and spending arm of the legislature, two weeks ago that he was taking another job, RI House spokesman Larry Berman told The Public's Radio. Today is Herrera's last day on the job at the legislature.

Herrera was hired in July for a vacant $49,820 post on the House administration staff -- a move that gained attention since his mother is a state representative and a supporter of House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello. Williams declined requests for comment at the time.

At the time, John Marion, executive director of the good government group, said Herrera's hiring appeared to be an example of patronage at the Statehouse.

“I have to wonder, why are they hiring operation staff at a time when seemingly they wouldn’t need as much support staff, because there is far less public activity occurring in the building,” Marion said at the time.

Berman said the post being vacated by Herrera will be a vacancy.

Williams was first elected in 1992 and remains outspoken on a range of issues.
