Update: Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has withdrawn its application to open a new obstetrics unit, according to the RI Dept. of Health.

Rhode Island Hospital’s application to open a new child birth unit has been deemed complete by the Rhode Island Department of Health. That's just one pending application for a new obstetrics unit.

Rhode Island Hospital filed paperwork in January asking for permission to open the new obstetrics unit on two new floors to be built on top of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Hospital officials describe the need for the new service to provide care for more medically complex patients. They also say their prices would be competitive with Women and Infants Hospital’s – the state’s leading child birth location.

State health officials asked for more information about why the new service is needed and how exactly it would complement what’s already available to pregnant Rhode Islanders.

There are several obstetrics units around Providence besides Women and Infants, including Memorial and Kent Hospitals. Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has also filed an application to open a new obstetrics unit.
