Public Hearing, Possible Vote Slated For Proposed Tiverton Casino

The Tiverton Town Council is slated to hold a public hearing Monday on Twin River’s Tiverton casino proposal.

Twin River wants to build a two-story, 85-thousand square foot casino in a remote part of Tiverton very close to the Massachusetts border. The council may vote to support the plan, or it could wait to vote on it at another time.

Twin River unveiled a plan last April to shift gambling from Newport to an isolated section of Tiverton right by the Massachusetts line. The company says this can help Rhode Island to cut possible losses in gambling revenue to its neighbor to the north.

Twin River has held a series of informational meetings to sketch out its plans. The company’s proposal calls for 32 table games, one thousand slot machines, a sit down restaurant and other attractions.

Spokeswoman Patti Doyle said Twin River is hopeful Tiverton officials will back the proposed casino. If the Tiverton council backs the casino, it could face approval by local and statewide voters in November 2016.
