Starting Friday, ferry boats will sail Narragansett Bay, connecting Providence and Newport for the first time since 2009. The high-speed ferry is scheduled to run daily through early September.

Tickets cost $10 each way, or $5 for seniors, children, and people with disabilities.

The 45-minute ride departs Providence at India Point Park, just across the river from downtown, and arrives in downtown Newport.

A similar ferry service shut down in 2009, despite drawing thousands of summer riders, after federal funding ran out.

State officials revived the ferry with a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
