Pawtucket's PawSox Wake Becomes Worcester's Celebration

Well Rhode Island is losing the Pawtucket Red Sox to Worcester and the Massachusetts city is celebrating in wake of the city council’s overwhelming vote to seal the PawSox, err WooSox, deal.

Worcester will host a celebration on Monday, September 17 at 5 p.m. at the Worcester Common Oval at 455 Main Street in Worcester. Among the celebrants –U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, Lt. Gov. Karen Polito, Mayor Joseph Petty, City Manager Edward Augustus, PawSox Chairman Larry Lucchino and “other special guests.”

The event will also feature Boston Red Sox legends and current PawSox players, according to a team statement. Following the ceremony, a block party celebration with food, games, entertainment and fireworks will be held by the Canal District Alliance.

One city’s wake is another’s celebration. As far as political fallout goes, the PawSox move to Massachusetts didn’t engender ballot box trouble for Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, who easily won Pawtucket in yesterday’s Democratic primary.

The existential question in Rhode Island is: Will we evah get used to calling our beloved baseball team the WooSox?
