New England Tech has landed a big speaker for the school’s 75th commencement – former New England Patriot and fan favorite Vince Wilfork, one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles.
Wilfork, at 6 foot 2 inches and 325 pounds, was with the Pats for eleven years and was a member of the 2015 Super Bowl champions. He recently became a free agent and will play next season for the Houston Texans. His jersey was number 75.
Besides his many triumphs on the gridiron, Wilfork has also tackled many off-field issues dear to his heart. He and his wife Bianca have raised more than $1.5 million to finance diabetes research and care, in honor of his father, who died of complications of diabetes. He and his family have also sponsored a wing at the Mattapan Community Health Center in Boston, have raised money for the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston and for the Diabetes Research Institute in his native Florida.
Also to be honored at commencement exercises will be former Rhode Island Gov. Philip Noel, who is also a former Warwick mayor. Noel and Wilfork will both receive honorary doctorates in humane letters.
New England Tech’s commencement will be held at the R.I. Convention Center in Providence at 11 a.m. on May 3rd. More than 1,000 graduates will receive degrees.
