Details of the impending state takeover of the Providence School District are expected this week. State education commissioner Angelica Infante-Green is expected to release a final order for the takeover, which will lay out a timeline for stripping the city of the power to run the public school district.

What specific functions the city will retain are not expected to be included in the final order, but the Providence School Board plans to continue a regular meeting schedule.  At the school administration level, Infante-Green will name a new superintendent who will report to her.

It’s unclear what roles the mayor and city council will play, once the schools are under state control. The final order is also expected to outline how parents and community members can be included in the turnaround of the Providence schools.
