Tickets for the Newport Folk Festival go on sale at 10 o’clock Thursday morning. The music lineup has yet to be announced.
That’s been the norm for the past several years, but it hasn’t stopped the festival from selling thousands of tickets. Last year, for the first time in its history, the complete three-day festival completely sold out. Three-day, two-day, and single passes will all go on sale. Ten percent of the three-day passes will be available at a special ‘early-bird rate.’
The historic festival experienced a popular resurgence in the late 2000’s after embracing less traditional forms of folk, and reaching out to younger artists. Producer Jay Sweet, said returning to the festival’s roots also helped spur its newfound popularity. “I’ve seen us actually going back to the original blueprint about the festival, where it wasn’t so much just about who was playing the festival, it was about the family reunion aspect. I know a lot of people that only see each other this one weekend every year, that only know each other from this one weekend,” said Sweet.
Recent headliners have included Mavis Staples, The Avett Brothers, and My Morning Jacket. Bob Dylan famously went electric at the festival in 1965.
