The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement, as a light snow covered Providence early Monday. Meteorologists expected just a dusting of snow and flurries across the interior portion of Southern New England, including Providence county.

In Rhode Island, snow tapered off by late morning. But a light covering made for slippery roads during the morning commute. Temperatures are expected to hover around freezing through the rest of the week with more precipitation possible towards the weekend.

Meteorologists have predicted more typical weather for January and February, after an unseasonably warm December, during which temperatures climbed above 60 degrees  several times, breaking a record in Providence.
