Immigration and Customs Enforcement is holding immigrant detainees at Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls. According to a spokesman for ICE, approximately 120 people are being held in the facility, the only privately-run prison in Rhode Island.
In April, Wyatt Detention Center began holding immigrants for the agency in connection with controversial Southwest Border Policy, which led to the arrest and detention of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Wyatt agreement led to public outrage by the City’s largely Latino politicians who called for the facility’s shutdown. The city and the Detention center are now in federal mediation.
According to the ICE spokesman, the agency began once again using Wyatt in May.
