Rhode Island’s former House Speaker Gordon Fox must report to federal prison this week. Fox will serve a three-year jail term scheduled to start on Tuesday.

Channel 12 reports the former Speaker of the house left his home just before 6 am this morning. He has until 2pm today to report with the federal Bureau of Prisons. The Providence Journal reports Fox has been assigned to a federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania.

Fox has until 2pm to appear at a jail selected by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He has already received his prisoner registration number. (It’s 09914-070.)

At his sentencing, Judge Mary Lisi requested that Fox be housed in a facility near Rhode Island. The closest two are in Danbury, Connecticut and Ayer, Massachusetts, about thirty miles North of Worcester.

Fox’s sentence came under a plea deal after he admitted he filed fraudulent tax returns and took a bribe of 50-thousand dollars to help a restaurant get a liquor license. The corruption occurred while he was serving as house speaker.

The case ended Fox’s 22-year career in the General Assembly. He was the first African American and the first openly gay speaker in Rhode Island.
