Former House speaker Gordon Fox is scheduled to be sentenced this Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of bribery, tax fraud and filing a false tax return. Federal prosecutors have recommended a three-year prison sentence for Fox.

US District Court Judge Mary Lisi can accept prosecutors’ recommended sentence for Fox, or impose a different one.

Fox was once the most powerful politician in Rhode Island. He pleaded guilty to corruption charges in March after an investigation that lasted more than a year. Fox had served almost 22 years as a lawmaker before not seeking re-election last year.

Some observers say giving Fox a stiffer sentence would send a stronger message against corruption. Prosecutors say the 36-month sentence is appropriate, in part since Fox pleaded guilty to bribery, even though the statute of limitations on the charge had already expired.
