Ex-Audi manager sought by US in diesel case held in Croatia

Published Wed Jun 17 2020 10:33:47 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)
Croatia's Interior Ministry says a former Audi engineering manager who was indicted in the U.S. in a diesel emissions cheating scandal has been arrested in Croatia. The ministry said Axel Eiser was arrested on a U.S. arrest warrant while crossing into Croatia from neighboring Slovenia on June 9. He is being held at a detention in the northern town of Pula. Eiser is a German citizen, and Germany’s Constitution forbids extradition of its citizens except to another European Union member nation or to an international court. A federal grand jury in Detroit, Michigan charged Eiser and three others last year in a 12-count indictment alleging conspiracy, wire fraud and violations of the Clean Air Act.
