Cyprus says common EU migration deal 'imperative'

Published Thu Jun 18 2020 19:31:31 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)
Cyprus’ interior minister says “it’s imperative” for the European Union to forge a common migration policy that obligates member states to take in a proportional number of asylum-seekers and restricts EU funding access to any country that refuses. The minister said Thursday the EU must also negotiate agreements with third countries to take back their citizens who have had their asylum applications rejected. The minister repeated that Cyprus leads the EU in the number of asylum-seekers it hosts relative to its population. He said key to Cyprus' revamped migration policy is to drastically slash the time it take to process asylum applications.
