Congressman David Cicilline is bringing the chair of the congressional Immigration Task Force to Rhode Island Wednesday evening to discuss the president’s executive order on immigration. The public forum will focus on preventing residents from getting caught up in scams.
That’s been a problem since President Obama issued an executive order back in November that offers a legal reprieve to some in the country illegally and parents with children who are U.S. citizens.
Cicilline said the scams go something like this: “Pay me $500 and I can get your application started or I can get your application expedited.”
Cicilline said there are no applications yet to process, but once they come out, area non-profits can help get them filed for free.
U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and Central Falls Mayor James Diossa will join Cicilline. The public forum will be held in the auditorium of the Providence Career and Technical Academy. It starts at 6:30pm.
