We’re in the midst of flu season. It’s officially been declared widespread by the state health department.  And Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin is urging churches to take precautions to keep the flu from spreading.

Topping his list of suggestions, Bishop Tobin says Catholic parishioners should stop drinking Communion wine from the same Chalice for the time being.  In addition, the Sign of Peace, typically a handshake, doesn’t need to be exchanged.  He says people handing out the Communion hosts should use hand sanitizer.  If you’re already feeling flu-like symptom Tobin says you don’t have to attend mass, in fact you shouldn’t.  He says the precautions are voluntary.  Tobin suggests that priests assess the situation in their churches.
