Published Fri Jun 19 2020 22:57:54 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)
The Associated Press changed its influential style guide Friday to capitalize the “b” in the term Black when referring to people, weighing in on a hotly debated issue. The news organization joins a growing number of media organizations to make the change. AP style is now to capitalize Black in a racial, ethnic or cultural sense because it conveys an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black. The news organization will also now capitalize Indigenous in reference to original inhabitants of a place. It's still debating whether to capitalize the term white.
